For about the last week I have had a cold mostly just congestion, but for the last couple of days when i blow my nose, it is very smelly, it is also a yellowish green, i can even taste it in my throat, the smell is awful, i don't feel bad at all just this smelly congestion, what causes it and how do you get rid of it.

Sounds most like an acute bout of sinusitis.  It's best to leave it alone, as most cases resolve themselves.  Doctors are now reluctant to give antibiotics unless it's chronic.  A Neilmed Sinus Rinse at the drugstore, $12, will help remove mucus and speed recovery.  Do not blow your nose very hard until it goes away, or it can spread into your eartubes.
