throat congestion, lose of voice lasts for months

Need help. I lose my voice every year. I get a build up of something in my throat that I can cough up every few days. Sometimes its redish in color. It's hard enough that I choke on it as well. This happened last year and lasted for about 5 months, all winter long and then some. Same thing happening now. Does any1 else have this happen? I've seen 20+ doctors, and 3 throat specialist and have 0 answers. Even saw a doctor who checks stomach acid to see if acid reflux is causing this. And its not. It starts out with a head cold almost every time, then on to the throat congestion. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It also hurt like hell, especially @ night.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Repeated episodes of dry cough, runny nose and throat irritation could most probably be due to allergens. These are substances like pollen, dust, animal dander, certain foods, insect venoms and certain medications. Exposure to allergens causes a runny nose with a resultant post nasal drip where secretions from the nose go backward into the throat and irritate causing cough. Cough is a protective mechanism by the body as it helps to prevent infections. An allergy specialist can help identify the allergens and desensitize you. In the meantime for relief from your symptoms you could do warm salt gargles and take OTC antihistamines.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

As soon as the new year comes ill be going to get an allergy test to find if there is anything that stands out that I could be allergic to. So far all doctors have been stumped so maybe this will give some answers. Thanks for the response, love this site.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

It can also happen due to iron deficiency anemia causing Plummer-Vinson syndrome, where there changes to the soft lining of the throat, causing throat compression. Discuss these options with your doctor when you happen to meet him next time.
