My Menieres turned out to be a food allergy (IgG not IgE).  I was responsive to steriods and even zinc (anything that suppressed the immune system).  Low salt diets just made things worse.  If you think yours is similar and you haven't been tested, I suggest you do.

Hello all...

I have Menieres myself. It played havoc on my hearing. I actually lost the rest of my hearing in 2006. Had cochlear implant surgery for one of my ears in 2007. I later had my second implant done in 2008. The second one irritated the Menieres and all heck broke loose with my balance.

It is very true that science today knows little about Menieres. Don't let anyone fool you that they are experts. We have little dabs here and there about Menieres and we have found, medically, things that can help, give relief, but no cure yet has been found.

When I had my balance jump out the window on me, Mayo Clinic took me in. They tested my balance and prescribed occupational rehab. It worked, it got me back on my feet and I was able to return to work full time. I still have to do certain exercises every evening before bed time and that keeps me going "steady".

So while there are no cures, there are non evasive treatments that can help you get relief. Consult with a good clinic that is dedicated to hearing disorders.

I've had it on and off for a few years, mostly on for the last year. I didn't do well with maxide (extreme fatigue) so now I'm on a very low sodium diet which seem to keep it under control. I try to stay under about 2000mg day, but that is hard to do. When I start feeling too good and quit watching what I'm eating, I can get an attack that can take weeks to gradually recover from. One of the silver-linings is that to eat low sodium, you have to eat less since almost everything as sodium, and I'm losing wait too!

My Mom had this for many years and had many attacks of vertigo that would sometimes last for days, but I think part of her problem was taking too many meds and not keeping to a low salt diet.  (I'm not even sure she know about low-salt as a treatment for Meniere's).

My husband was told that he had meniere's disease about 20 years. He suffered from sound and pressure evoked dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, tinnutis (sp??), hearing his voice, heartbeat, eye movements, conductive hearing loss & nausea. We finally found Dr. Carey at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore who has a treatment for Meniere's. However, we found that Mike did not have Meniere's He had superior canal dehisence, a rather recently discovered condition and was able to cure him. It required inner-cranial surgery, but only 1 week after later his is well on his way to being cured. Dr. Carey performed the same tests that has been done repeatedly, but he knows what he is looking for!  Not only is he the greatest doctor we ever met, he is one of the kindest also. I am not a health professional, I just want to tell everyone who may have this condition about our experiences. http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/otolaryngology/carey.html

Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any long term solutions for Meniere's Syndrome/Disease, though there are surgical solutions for the most severe cases.  I found a site that might be of help to you in gaining some information.  http://www.menieresinfo.com/treatment.html
