unusual cough

Over a week ago now, I developed a little cough from a tickling in my throat.  It has since turned to a bad cough and pain in the upper chest just below the throat when I cough.  The tickling is still there too.  I do not cough up anything.  It is a dry cough but is getting painful in the throat and chest area.  Night time is worse.  Antibiotics do nothing.  My daughter has developed the same thing at about the same time.  We do not live very close to each other so have not been around the same people.  She is 34 yrs old.   I am 56.  Neither of us smoke.  Any thoughts as to what this is and the cause??

That sounds like post nasal drip. It feels like a tickle and its a dry cough. Coughing at night is common. Did you try a decongestant? I use Sudafed, the 12 hour one. If your chests hurts, I would suggest you go to the doctor as you don't want it to turn in to bronchitis.
