Growth found while 'tubing' for surgery

My friend had surgery this week for a torn peroneal tendon.  When they were inserting the tube before surgery they found a 'growth'.  We will be making an appointment with an ENT as soon as he is mobile again.  In the meantime we are both pretty worried.  Could this be as simple as scar tissue from a surgery just over a year ago to replace two discs in his neck (they went in from the front for this surgery)?

Thanks for your time.
