Staph

Staph

I went to my dermatalogist yesterday for a rash on eyelid (atopic dermatitis) and to ask about a recurring sore just inside one nostril.  This "sore" has bothered me on and off for two years.  The Dr. noticed a bright red rash inside my nose toward back.  Could it be staph?  The doctor didn't say and since I never noticed anything up my nose (can't really see), I didn't ask.  It does not hurt or itch.  My nose does feel very dry.   She referred me to ENT and I have an appointment Thurs.  I am concerned that if it is staph, I should get on some antibiotics now.  I did look and it is very very bright red.  Almost looks like raw skin with maybe a white/yellowish dot or two but it is hard see even with a mirror and light.  I have a granddaughter that I take care of occasionally and I don't want to spread anything.  I don't know if sore and rash are related and don't know how long I've had the red rash.  I've had the sore off and on for at least two years.  Sometimes it hurts, sometimes al ot, a little, or disappears altogether.  Should I go to ER?

It is difficult to render a recommendation without an adequate exam.  Any number of things can lead to redness in your nasal cavity--infection is just one of them (strains of staphlococcus are just one type of bacteria that can lead to infections).  Often times, infections are present with other symptoms.  A few other common causes of redness include allergies, dryness, and nasal irritation.  A further work up from an ent would be appropriate.  Evaluating the sore in your nose is appropriate as well.  Best wishes.
