Constant hunger

Constant hunger

I am currently 5'8'' and 88 pounds. I've been anorexic for three years and am in the refeeding process now. I used to never be hungry but now no matter what I eat, I'm voraciously hungry. Actually, the voracious appetite came a couple months even before the refeeding process. I don't know what to do. I miss feeling full. Also, I've been having severe constipation despite increased food portions and taking stool softeners. Is this normal in refeeding? Thank you for any help you could give. This constant hunger has me at the end of my rope.

Hi Cynthia,

First off I understand how challenging it is to begin refeeding after years of fearing food and living with painful deprivation. Anorexia is exhausting. But the sooner you take the baby steps to a healthier lifestyle, the sooner you'll be living a life you actually enjoy.
Your body is still very hungry and malnourished, and now that it knows it is being fed, it will take all it can to protect itself from another famine. It is it's survival mechanism and it only wants to keep you alive and strong. So yes, it is completely normal. Constipation or bloating is common as well as your stomach is getting used to digestion again. Stool softeners are okay once in a while, but I've had plenty of experience with this as well, and patience was the best method of all. You will get your rhythm back. Just be sure to drink plenty of warm liquids (which relaxes the bowels) and don't overdo it on fibre supplements as these can make constipation worse.
Congrats again on taking better care for your body! It will take jut as good of care for you in return. :-)

If you need anything, I'm only an email away.
All the best,
Brittany
