Help

I'm currently an 18 year old girl and I think I might have an eating disorder. Im 5'4" and 105 pounds. My question is whether or not this is an unhealthy weight or could even come close to being classified as an anorexic weight. As stupid as it sounds, if I do get help I don't want to be the fat one in treatment.  I also was wondering common reqiurements for treatment and if I'm even sick enough. I dont see my weight being low,but still feel as though I have an issue regardless and I'm not sure what to do.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I am obessed with everything that has to do with food as wierd as that sounds. I sometimes dont eat for like 4 days than ill binge. I took adderall to try to lose weight but was suspended due to it, so I stoped that. Some weeks I have no issue just the thoughts in the back of my head, but other weeks esp when im stressed I sub consciously use not eating as a coping skill. I want to constantly lose weight and its annyoing having that in the back of my head. Ive had people comment on my eating habits before, but I don't think Im skinny and stuff to have a problem or sick enough but these "issues" have been going on for years and honestly I dont even know what "normal" eating is. Im confused and tired. idk what do you think I should do?

"I dont see my weight being low,but still feel as though I have an issue regardless and I'm not sure what to do."

Why do you feel you have an issue, please explain. You weight is not the issue but maybe what you are doing to maintain, loose, or gain may be? May not even have to do with weight.

Is someone else trying to tell you that you have an eating disorder?

It may or may not be an eating disorder. She didn't say what her symptoms were.... Something obviously brought her here and we can't say she does or doesn't have an e.d. based on what she has written.

OKay, this is NOT an eating disorder. If your low weight (which by the way, is actually about average) is caused by purposeful restriction and dieting, then you MIGHT have an eating disorder.

In order to be diagnosed with an Eating Disorder you must have most of the following symptoms:

1. Preoccupation with weight and body image.

2. Obsession with exercise, counting calories and grams of fat.

3. Using laxatives, purging, or diuretics.

4. Fear of gaining weight, or fear of being percieved as fat.

To me it sounds like the only problem you have is being thin. If your thiness did not come about by the unhealthy habits listed above, you DO NOT have an eating disorder. If you simply do not feel hungry you DO NOT have an eating disorder.

I have struggled with anorexia and bulimia for 6 years. Trust me on this. This is NOT an eating disorder.

Hi there,

Look, it's not about weight. That's one symptom, but is not what classifies an eating disorder. The fact is, you must have some sort of problem going on or you would not have come here right? Weight aside, you/we/a treatment team/etc will help you to know if you have a problem and treat it better if they know your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

How can we help you?

Or let me ask you this and let you ponder it. Do you want help? Think about what you said, "I don't want to be the fat one in treatment." First, okay, you are obviously not fat, but think about what you are saying? Really think hard about it. Will you be competing with others to be sick? Treatment should be getting well right...

As far as requirements for treatment, what kind of treatment are you thinking about? There are different levels of treatment. You could do outpatient, some type of partial program or IOP, and there's inpatient or residential. At the very least, I would highly recommend you start with a therapist and dietitian who specialize in eating disorders. Maybe they can help you? If you all decide to go for a higher level of care, they would then refer you on perhaps.

I'm not judging you with those first things I've questiond....just trying to give you some things to ponder. I understand some of the thoughts you are having. I really do and have been there. Let me know if I can do anything to help you. Hope all is well!
