Refeeding edema?

by rasha1987, Oct 23, 2008 03:01PM
I starved myself for the two months of August and September (went down from about 109 to my current weight: 165), and on the 4th of October I freaked out when I saw my reflection in the mirror and binged horribly. The next day I did the same (Excessive food and fluid) in a misguided attempt to gain weight and I developed massive edema (hands and feet. sometimes I think in the chest too, I'm not sure anymore). Kidneys are fine, liver is fine, no heart failure... Why is the edema still there? When will it go away? And should I restrict my fluid intake or calories to make it better? It's like the water retention is constant, I'll eat one small egg after not eating anything for 10 hours and feel my veins begin to burst with water.. Answers?

Rasha-OMG I went through the same thing!  I was  70 pounds and gained up to 165 and I HATE IT when i binge my veins swell up and I dont know what is happening.  All I know it's from when we both starved ourselves.  I'm thinking it could be from uric acid still in the blood but im nnot sure.  it happens when I eat too.  It's making me want to go back into my eating disorder.  Someone else told me it's hormones btu I don't know.

No, definitely do not restrict fluid intake to try to compensate. That is one of the worst things you could do. If anything, you need to be drinking lots of water. Edema during refeeding is common, however I am wondering if a doctor knows that this is happening. It's always good to have someone keeping that type of thing in check and just watching it to make sure things are okay.
