absent periods

absent periods

I lost 2 and a half stone in 5 months three years ago by under taking a very strict regime. I was on a low calorie diet (1000-1200 cal) whilst training hard 5 times a week. My periods stopped altogether during this time and have never returned. I have kept the weight off by continuing to exercise 5 times a week and control my calorie intake. I am 5ft1 and a healthy 8st 3 . I'm so worrried about not having periods but am scared to take the pill (cerazette) the doctor has prescribed in case it makes me put on weight again. I find it difficult to change my diet and exercise and don't want to have to gain weight to have a period. I certainly don't look anorexic and know alot of girls my stature who have regular periods. I initally thought it was just the shock to ny body that stopped my periods but three years on and I'm still waiting. I'm scared I'll never be able to have children. Help.

i found this artical for you, Yes, losing weight can affect your menstrual cycle. This happens for several reasons. One, as stated below, is due to a lack of body fat, particularly brown adipose tissue around the midsection. The body will try not to allow pregnancy if you do not have the physical resources to protect that pregnancy. Also, any large weight adjustment causes a shift in hormones, because estrogen release is partially based on your fat cells. When you lose a large amount of weight, estrogen automatically declines. If you stop losing this weight at a healthy weight, once your body adjusts to the new amount of hormones, you should return to normal. Another reason for lack of menstruation after weight loss is poor nutrition, related to a lack of iron, zinc and lack of healthy dietary fats. Regardless of how much you exercise, or how much you weigh - if you have a lack of iron, zinc and healthy fat in your diet, you can develop amenorrhea.

Thank you so much for reply. I haven't talked to anyone about this and that info has shed some light on what could be happening. I will look up some foods that I could add to my diet. Thanks again.
