Could endometriosis be the cause of a suspicious pap?

I am 42 and I had a diagnostic laproscopy procedure when I was 25 which resulted in an endometriosis diagnosis.  I was very good at going each year and having my follow-up pap and routine exam.  Until I moved out of state...then it was 8 years between exams.

I had been symptom free until I started to experience some minor "menopausal type" symptoms.  My blood work came back ok, and they say that I'm not menopausal.  However,  I just got my pap results back and the nurse said that the results were basically normal with the exception that there were endometrial cells present.  I have an ultrasound scheduled for next week.  Could it be that the endometriosis is what they detected on the pap or do I have bigger things to worry about?

I had a transvaginal ultrasound today.  The result came back normal, with no thickening of the uterine wall.  So, that's good news.  The doctor decided to perform an endometrial biopsy and that was another story.  I have had procedures in the past and none of them were painful like this.  He tried his best, but could not perform the biopsy.  The cervix would not dialate, even with manual manipulation.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but my last period was June 27, 2014 and they don't know why...so, he has put me on Prevera to try and kick-start my period and I'll go back in a month for another ultrasound to look at the uterine lining again.  If then my period still hasn't started we'll look into hormone therapy.

Let me know how it goes. I am thinking its quite possible the precancerous cells can come back since for the most part they grow very slowly.

I wish you luck :)

No, I don't take any meds for the endometriosis.  As I have gotten older my symptoms have gotten much milder.

I also had a "bad" pap when I was 22,  I did just as you said, had a biopsy, cryosurgery, etc.  I had the paps every six months for two years, and ultimately everything was clear.

This time they say that the pap is essentially good except for the presence of these cells..  They have me scheduled for a vaginal ultrasound on Friday.  They tell me they are looking for thickening of the wall of the uterus.

It is rare to find Endo on the cervix through a pap but not impossible. I am thinking it has to do with precancerous cells. I had them as well. At first they were mild did another pap 6 month later mild again. I had a colposcopy booked to biopsy the cells and they ended up being high grade precancerous lesions. He felt he got it all so in Canada not sure where else does this but you have to have follow up paps every 6 months for 2 yrs to make sure they get them all. Mine came back so I had a leep done and this usually gets them all and you don't have any problems afterwards. I wouldn't be too worried at this point. Precancerous cells for the most part grow slow.

It is possible that your symptoms can be still Endometriosis on top of the endometrial cells. There is no cure for Endo so its possible it has grown back hence the symptoms you are having with the menopausal type symptoms.

Do you take any meds for Endo?
