Methadone

I have been diagnosed with severe endometrious  and was told i would never get conceive, well i did. The problem is i take 30 to 40 mil of metadone a day for pain. No longer do i suffer from pain i had, it's much easier to handle a bad back than several cycts on the ovaries. The point i am getting to is how safe is it to withdraw while being preg.? I do not want to hurt my baby anyway, please help! I have a friend who stayed throughout her pregnancy on methadone, her clinic told her if she were to withdraw she would lose her baby. Is this true, i took my dose down already to 20 mil a day.

I would ask your doctor.  For some the withdrawal is more difficult, everyones body is different.  I wouldn't just stop cold turkey, but if the effects of the medication are going to cause problems with the pregnancy, you should take whatever advice your doctor gives you.  I was taking three different medications when I found out I was pregnant, I had just moved to a new town and hadn't found a OBGYN yet so I called the community nurse looking for advice on what to do with my meds.  She told me to stop them that day, cold turkey...I went through two weeks of withdrawal and it was terrible!!  When I finally had my first appt with the new OBGYN and told him, he said that was the worst advice he had ever heard.  He said I should have stopped the meds, but should have been weened off of them.  So, every case is different, and you should definately consult you doc!

having been hooked on methadone myself, given to me for pain like you, and gone through withdrawels, i would deffinatly reccomend you get your dr's help.  it is an extremely difficult drug to quit.  another help would be to go to the addictions forum.  we are a great source of help, with nurses in there that know from first hand experience what to do.  my prayers are with you, and congrats on the pregnancy.  i too was told i'd never get pregnant because of endo, but was blessed with a beautiful daughter.
