Absence epilepsy Adults

I am 53 years old and started having seizures when I was 8 months pregnant, with my now 29 year old son.  I was told that it was a hormonal imbalance and was given Dialantin and changed to Tegretol which has had me seizure free for 15 years. Last November I had a short episode and was fine afterward. This September I started having absence epilepsy. My doctor increased my Tegretol dose and they have stopped. I have read that it is very rare to start absence epilepsy in adulthood.

Hi Cindy while I do not know all the medical ins and outs I began to have seizures in 2001 age 47. At that time I had the question as to why so late in life and was told that it is not uncommon to start with epilepsy after the age of 40. Prior to the full seizures I had experienced these absence seizures. Looking back through my life the origins of my problems started when as a pre school child I ran into the corner of a face brick wall while stumbling as I ran towards it. (not such a clever thin to do) In my early school days I must have had a few such absence episodes but not understanding it I did not speak of it fearing that I would be accused of not concentrating. I know how annoying they can be and wish you all the best as you continue to get the medical control but remember that there are many out there who do understand and share your questions
