Parahyperthyroidism

Since I have no seizure doctor at the time, does anyone know if Depakote taking for seizure control can cause parahyperthyroidism.

Yes.... and I do not have primary hyperparathyroidism, Right now the cause of the hyperparthyroidism is therefore in the period of being investigated by the doctors. Thus I was speculating as to whether or not Depakote could be a factor, especially since I had pancreatitis in 2003 in the past at which time I was also taking Depakote( 2400mg daily!)  Reason also undetermined. I do have osteopenia and must be careful not to fall...and break bones. Thank you for response.

Do you mean hyperparathyroidism? If so, there are no reports of this problem that I've seen. There have been some reports in the past few years of anti-seizure meds such as phenytoin causing reduced bone mineral density and increased non-traumatic fractures over the long term. Perhaps this is what you are thinking of?
