Tegretol side effects

by buddy901, Jun 09, 2008 06:05AM
My sister was on 600mg of tegretol a day. A few days into the dose she developed peripheral neuritis. Sever pains, burning parestesias..... At the ER , tegretol was 12.8 they told her to reduce the dose to 400mg/day, gave her some morphine and sent her home. How The morphine is useless, yesterday neurontin was added.
How long would you expect the symptoms to persist? What is the best pain management for this?

Thanks

Hi,
Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the peripheral nerves.Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications are often used to ease discomfort.
The following therapies are aimed at reducing symptoms and may include:
Relaxation training
Biofeedback
Walking
Exercise
Yoga
Warm baths
Massage
Acupuncture
Transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulation.
The neuropathy caused by medications or toxins is completely reversed when these substances are stopped or avoided. Correction of vitamin B12 deficiency often improves symptoms.
