Very rare seizures

My wife is 44 and she has had some seizures/fits in the past.
Before the age of 31 she had never had any seizures, however she had 5 in one afternoon and stayed in hospital for two weeks. The doctors have stated that she is not an epileptic, but they are not certain as to the cause.
For a short time she was taking sodium valproate (approx 3 months).
Then my wife was seizure free for nine years until December 2004 when she had a further 2 seizures, but this time was only kept in hospital for one night. Again the cause was not identified and no medication was prescribed.
Then she was seizure free for a further four years, until the 4th April 2008 when she experienced a further 4 seizures whilst we were out shopping. This time she was kept in hospital for 6 nights and released again without a conclusive diagnosis.
On all of the occasions of seizures occuring, it was after a short period of illness (influenza etc) when Her temperature was raised. We have read about febrile fits, but we assumed that they only occur in children.
She also seems more susseptible to fits when agitated about something i.e. when stressed out.
Can anyone offer any explanation please.

Hello,

It is saddening that still there is no conclusive diagnosis has been reached but such scenarios are not uncommon in medical practice. Sometimes its really difficult to reahc to a diagnosis inspite of the advances in technology.

I am sure EEG must have been done. Seizures associated with fever are common in children. The coincidence of fits occuring when she is stressed out may not be just a mere coincidence. There is a term knwon as hysterical reaction which manifests like seizure. I am afraid she doesnt have this. The differentiating factor between epilepsy and hysterical reaction is the presence of suggestive EEG changes in epilepsy.

Keep me posted.

Regards.
