Hi, my 60 yr old father has recently been having blackout spells. He'll be out 15-20 sec sometimes and then 3- 4 min @ times. Then wakes up & instantly gets what he describes as a warm rush feeling across his chest then it goes straight to his head & gets a severe headache and then blacks out again sometimes. Past several days these episodes will last 30-45 min. He's had 2 EEG's which did show some minor abnormality, 2 CT scans, 2 MRI's, an EKG, an Echo cardiogram, a carotid Doplar scan which they found right carotid in neck 90% blocked, did surgery and cleaned it out, left carotid is 60-75% blocked, chest X-rays, & had blood work done. His meds are Keppra,Xanax,Prozac,Baby asprin,Lipitor also takes 2 percocet and 2 benedryl for the headache pain 1-2 times a day. His neurologist doctor suggests next doing a video EEG to see if anything changes during an episode/seizure. If anyone knows of any other testing that can be done that he hasn't had done yet PLEASE let me know. Thank you, David
Without complete evaluation I may not able able to confirm the exact cause of your symptoms. Video EEG helps in prolonged simultaneous recording of the patient’s behavior and the EEG. It can help differentiate epileptic seizures from nonepileptic seizure mimics such as psychogenic nonepileptic attacks and organic seizure-mimics like syncope and parasomnias. This testing brings to light other options available for treatment. Test like single photon emission tomography can be done in conjunction with the video EEG monitoring; it will help pinpoint the areas of the brain causing the seizures. Do consult his neurologist for more queries and concerns. Keep me posted on how he is doing.
Best wishes and regards!
