About mid march I was diagnosed with mono. I had a severe sore throat with white spots, feeling tired but not all that tired and just generally feeling unwell. about 3 weeks went by maybe a little less and i started to do my regular activities. I am a competitive bodybuilder and went back to my old style of lifting weights and doing cardio 5 someitmes 6 times a week. I am also a college student as well. About three weeks went by and i felt a little headache sore throat coming along, i woke up one day and my tonsills were swollen again and felt completley sick. I didnt have the white spots in my throught nor do i feel as bad as i did when i had these symptoms in march. I went for a test today and will knwo the results tomorrow, Honestly I am scared to death because my life revolves around physical activity and the information I have read about chronic ebv and cfc make me so stressed out and nervous. Can somebody offer me some advice on all of this it would be greatly appreciated. I will get the results back tomorrow, but i just want to know what some of you guys/girls think.
The worst thing you can do is stress. You body has an infection and you need to do whatever is required (my opinion) to beat this infection. My suggestions:
~ pace yourself and don't push yourself
~ consider seeing a Naturopathic physician. What I like about these physicians is that the ones I've seen have spent at least an hour with me during my first visit. Their focus is on the immune system and they may recommend some supplements (i.e. olive leaf extract, Trans Factor, Host Defense, etc.) to help boost your immune system.
~ don't stress.... try to meditate if you can
~ don't engage in any physical activity if it is making you feel worse
As someone who had CFS after having a severe case of mono when I was very young... I cannot stress this enough.
Keep us posted if you can and let us know when you get your results tomorrow.
thanks for your input, but does this sound like i didnt get over my first bout of mono effectively, or something else. I didnt get bloowdwork done to make sure my mono was gona, I just felt better, now i ahve some of the symptoms but not so bad. I am not tired and I am recovering from a sore throat.
After I had mono, about two years later.. I had to get my tonsils taken out. I kept getting throat infections... among other infections (sinus, URI's, etc.)
Since your immune system is worn down, you might want to consider getting your throat swabbed and asking your physician to order a throat culture.
As far as your diet, one thing you may want to do is cut down on sugar & processed foods.
Another suggestion I have for you is a simple product that I've found gives me energy and apparently kills bacteria is vinegar. I purchase Braggs organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and add about a Tablespoon to my drinking water. It gives me a boost of energy and hey... since vinegar kills bacteria.... you may want to give it a shot and see if helps your sore throat. For more information, you can google "vinegar" + "bacteria" and read up on it and also check out Bragg's website. The product is very inexpensive as well.
I talked to my doctor today, I did get mono again. He said it was because i went back to weightlifitng too soon. Because I was going to another doctor the first time I had mono he told me to go back to your normal life as oon as you feel better. well i did feel better but my body probably needed more time to recover. My new doctor told me to not lift weights for two months lay low and encouraged me to walk every so often in a couple weeks. He said you will be back to your normal bodybuilding routine in no time but your body needs a lot of help right now for total recovery. So i ahve to live with low physical activity for 2 months. I feel pretty descent right now, no sore throat, but tired. Im really gonna try take it easy for a couple months. I dont think my situation is that bad but i guess i went back to my old style of lifting weights once aday with cardio twice a day too fast and this is where it got me. I am a bodybuilder I know how much to eat, what to eat when and how much to take in. Because of mono I do have to alter my diet, by decreasing the protein and taking in some more complex carbs for energy. So im hoping my body will be itself in a few months.
