Treatment for long term Glandular Fever?

Treatment for long term Glandular Fever?

It's a bit of a complicated story really. To cut a long story short, back in August I got tonsilitis for the first time and was treated with penicillin V as doctor thought it sounded more bacterial than viral. After about 2 weeks I shook it off. For the entireity of this year I have been sicker with more colds, flu and infections than probably the last 5 years put together. Then in September I came down with a nasty headache which I had for about 10 days and completely lost my appetite, I could only stomach water then I became photophobic and had a stiff neck accompanied by nausea and vomiting and a fever of 40+ so I was taken to hospital. Whilst I was there they suspected viral meningitis so I had quite a lengthy stay in hospital. I was treated with very strong IV acyclovir (anti viral) and two sets of antibiotics for a secondary infection in my brain I was on strong IV metronidazole and amoxicillin aswell as morphine for pain relief on top of codeine, ibuprofen and paracetamol with cyclizine for anti emetic treatment. My blood pressure was extrmely low as my fluid intake was poor so I was on IV fluids and my pulse dropped as low as 35 one evening. Whilst I was there they noted extremely large lymph nodes and my optic discs were blurred when they examined my eyes. Upon discharge, I had been sent for numerous tests as they first suspected lymphoma but after a lymph node removal they ruled this out. I have had tonsillitis about 4 times since August with the latest bout of the Christmas period. I am still very fatigued, have an extremely sore tongue and my headache is coming back. I have also had quite severe hair loss that I have had to cut my hair really short and my uncle who is a doctor seems to think I have a very bad case of glandular fever. I am really at my wits end because I just feel so ill all the time and it is affecting my life severely. I have had to take a break from university and I find it difficult to leave the house because I am so tired.

Is there any drastic treatments I can have? I am not sure how true this is but have heard with long term EBV and glandular fever you can have a course of anti virals and steroids.

Hello, I don't really know too much about glandular fever, so I'm afraid I can't really help you there.  As far as long-term EBV, yes it exists, but it sounds to me like you're dealing with something more/else.  I have not heard of any anti-virals or steroids helping with EBV, even when dealing with chronic/extended EBV, but I'm not a doctor, so unfortunately I don't have all the answers.  Ay any rate, I do hope things start improving for you!  Please keep us updated on how things are going!
