Erectal Dysfunction

I am unable to have sex with my partner lately becos it softens soon after a short erection after foreplay. I was told that it could be a side effect of Tenormin (50mg daily) which I have been taking for many years now.  Though my blood pressure is quite under control, I was told not to stop the medication.  Please advice.

Hello. Yes, Tenormin can interfere with sexual response. You have several options: first, ask your physician if there is an alternate medication you can take for your hypertension--one that isn't associated with sexual side effects. If switching medications is not an option and you’re stuck with Tenormin, try exploring sexual acts with your partner that are NOT dependent on erection. Erections may come and go, but there are lots of ways to be sexual without them, including oral and manual stimulation, sensual touch, etc. If you can get beyond thinking of sex as an activity that must be done with a hard penis, you'll find lots of ways to have fun. Your partner may have some creative ideas too, so be sure to talk about it. If you are really committed to the idea that you MUST have an erection, it would probably be helpful to consult with a urologist regarding other options. Good luck. Dr. J
