Exercise suggestions to loose weight

by oregonsticklers, Jul 10, 2005 12:00AM
I am 40 years old, suffer from moderate Stickler's Syndrome (a genetic connective tissue disorder caused by a collagen defect - see www.sticklers.org/sip/def.html), are 60 lbs overwieght, and are in need of exercises that I can use to lose weight without worsening my condition.

I have arthritis in my knee & back, severe vericose veins, constant pain in almost all joints, can not be in bending over or laying on stomach position for any lenghth of time without setting off severe atypical migranes.

I also have other barriers to exercise: I am at higher risk of retinal detachment, can't handle any high impact, and have a fear of water, so water exercises have to be able to done in 4 ft or less of water, as I will not go near the deep end & can't swim except backstroke. I also can not tread water.

The last time I was able to sucessful able to loose weight, it was due to doing hard physical work as a nurses assistant in a nursing home in blazing summer heat for several months (before diagnosis), but I also tore my back & knee up in the process.

A freind of mine suggested the elliptical machine. What are your thought on that?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

That would be an ideal choice. It is no impact and is almost like riding a bike while standing. If you find a good machine you will have multiple tension settings and elevation setings.

Also remember that in your case and most cases less is more. If you do 15-20 minutes of slow light exercise 5 times week along with proper diet you will lose weight.

Congratulations on the motivation to exercise and better your condition.  You no doubt have had a rough time so far and your dedication to improve your situation makes you a very strong person.

As for exercises, the eliptical machine is a good suggestion for low impact, but the presence of varicose veins means that likely any significant pressure put on your legs will cause pain (especially if you are overweight).  If you find the eliptical machine to not cause you signficant pain, it is a good idea.

The first thing that came to my mind was a exercise bicycle.  I would recommend finding one that allows you to sit upright or leaned back since you cannot lean forward.  There are many models that come with moving arm handles as well.  These would be especially helpful since you have leg problems.  If your legs begin to hurt you can use your arms more while still maintaing your heart rate.

The best exercises for your condition would be done in water.  Water provides resistance without impact.  Doing exercises in 4 feet or less of water is completely fine.  Your local gym or pool might offer water aerobics.  You can contact them and discuss your current condition and they will be more than happy to accomodate and help you in your endeavors.  If you don't want to do water aerobics, you can try walking across the pool in the depth you feel comfortable in, back and forth for about 20 minutes at first.  Moving your arms in the water will add extra resistance and help you benefit more from your exercise.

Set small and achievable goals at first, and you should see improvement after some time.  Gradually work your way up to 22, then 25, then 30 minutes of exercise at a time as you feel comfortable and stronger.  Just stay with it!
