Flu like symptoms after exercise

Can anyone shed light on my issue? My cardiologist even took my case to the Cleveland Clinic only to come back with, "They have never seem anything like you before." That's scary!! I have been misdiagnosed by every "ologist" out there. Whichever one you are with, you are diagnosed within their parameter of knowledge. As a result I have been diagnosed with everything from CFS, Lupus, MS, neurological, POTs, Fibromyalgia (non of which ended up being accurate) and most recently Addison's Disease, and adrenal insufficiency as a result of my longlist of symptoms:                                                                                                                                                      - Difficulty getting up in the morning
- Continuing fatigue not relieved by sleep
- Chronic insomnia (wired but tired)
- Craving for salt or salty foods
- Lethargy - lack of energy even for things once loved
- Increased effort to do everyday tasks
- Decreased sex drive
- Decreased ability to handle stress
- Increased time to recover from illness
- Intolerance to exercise
- Light headed when standing up quickly
- Mild depression
- Less enjoyment or happiness with life
- Increased PMS or bloating
- Symptoms increase if meals skipped or inadequate nutrition
- Thoughts less focused, more fuzzy
- Memory less accurate
- Decreased tolerance - agitation
- Best time of day between 4-6pm
- Decreased productivity

HOWEVER as certain as my doctor was based upon a 24 hour saliva collection that showed my cortisol almost non existent, I just got all my blood work back from the endocrinologist who was testing me for Addison's Disease and it showed my cortisol levels normal. BUT my Aldosterone was low as was my WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT. Here is an interesting angle I have not seen posted. I had tried working out the day before my blood work and ACTH test as my only little "test study" as I have been suspicious of how my body responds after very mild exercise. FORGET the over working out...I am trying to pull off 10 minutes on a slow elliptical. FULL BLOWN FLU symptoms. I am 49 weight 118 and eat pure organic so the toxin issue though plausible doesn't seem to fit me. I have done the probiotic, high grade vitamins including MAGNESIUM as low levels can lead to symptoms mentioned. NOTHING works long term. SO DOES MY BODY VIEW EXCERCISE AS AN ATTACK AND SOMETHING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM MUST FIGHT...hence the low white cell count?  THIS at least intrigued my GP and we will be running more blood test as ALL prior blood work for past two years did not show a decrease in WBC. ONLY after I exercised did the WBC drop and I mean a lot! What doctors do not know much about and pride gets in the way of their being candid, is the hormone adrenal connection. The medical community will only acknowledge diseases and disorders that a pharmaceutical company has a treatment for. Sorry to sound so cynical but it's all about the money. Want to make a doctors head spiral around...mention ADRENAL FATIGUE. They will only acknowledge adrenal insufficiency if the gold standard ACTH test shows low cortisol. Well my blood work was fine (except the Alderosterone) and I have hypoglycemia, dizziness upon standing, low blood pressure and heart rate, go ice cold "on the inside" of my body including face and eye lids, though skin can feel warm to touch and others times ice cold inside and outside my body.  Leg aches and heaviness, arms too.  ALL these symptoms correlate with low adrenal function. So in desperation I had a 24 hours saliva test through Neuro Science Lab (best around for homeopathic) and my cortisol barely registered on the graph. All this to say, read up on Adrenal Insufficiency-Adrenal Fatigue and you will find what you are all experiencing!

Final note - all FDA approved medications have a level of toxicity to be approved this is why most people end up with a medication cocktail. One to offset the side effects of the other. The ONLY positive results I have seen is through hydration (clean filtered water) and eating "live" unprocessed foods (organic) and NO sugar, caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, etc. - they all affect the chemical balance and increase symptoms. Any help, suggestions, a "Dr. House" reading this, is much appreciated. Keep this blog going because the journey is long and lonely!

I had this flue like problem after strenuous workouts and lived with it for about 6 months before looking for help.  I finally asked my brother-in-law who is an acupuncturist and has an extensive background in Chinese herbs if he had any solutions.  He said that the cause was the release of toxins and other things from the body which overwhelmed the liver and suggested the Ho-shou-wu Chinese herb.  I tried many things before and this is the first thing I have tried that gave me relief.  It can be purchased on the internet at various herb sites and is inexpensive.  I hope this helps others, good luck.

I as experienced the same thing. I am started to feel extreme fatigue in my legs and arms.  For approximately 6 months. Then I noticed I was so severly tired almost falling asleep mid afternoon or in my car whilst driving. Then the caveat to it all was when I stood up and was not dizzy (as I have experienced dizziness before) this was different , I was light headed it went on for a while, I was sleeping a lot I actually took 5 days off work because I was so tired, light headed, fatigued and felt unable to focus.
My primary doctor did a battery of tests, my white bloodcells were low and some other levels were low also.  I am a naturalist i.e eat raw, fruit, etc never take meds only consult with a homeopathic dr. so I took the results to my homeopathic dr. Who analyzed my results he saw some low ferritin   levels, but also WBC low and adrenal levels were extremely low.

My homeopathic has me on a homeopathic remedy to increase white blood cells, I am on an intense adrenal support supplements as well as other all natural supplements.  I have instructed to drink lots and lots more filtered water, eat tons more fruit, for energy - I now drink over 5 large glasswsof organic fruit smoothies a day - x2 breakfast followed by large glass of water, x2 mid after noon large spinach Saldana for dinner and one more fruit smoothie - this made the world of difference.  UNTIL this past week. After the new I indulged in a lot of alcohol and now I feel depleted again.  I am now back to increasing my fruit again.

I will keep you updated. My homeompathic dr is phenomenal I know he knows what he is talking about.

The issue is with your bodies use of magnesium.  Take magnesium Glycinate 400-600 mgs on a totally empty stomach and don't eat for an hour.  Solves the issue in a day.  Take it two - three times a day for a few weeks.  Then drop back to one or two does a day. Works wonders.
Well, maybe.  It can be good for muscle cramps and sleeping if you take it before bedtime, but generally, minerals aren't absorbed unless you take them with a meal.  It might make you tired.  It might give you loose stools.  It might make you calmer.  It might make you sleepy.  But again, if you're taking it because you need magnesium because you're low in it it doesn't get absorbed well unless taken with a meal.  You need as much to be absorbed for these other purposes, but you probably don't want those effects when you're trying to exercise, either.  Glad it worked for you, just saying, doesn't mean it will solve this problem for others.  Cheap enough to try, though.  If you're taking it on an empty stomach, though, take the citrate form.  It absorbs better in an acidic environment.  And careful about taking too much, it will throw off your calcium levels and the levels of your other electrolytes.  So don't go nuts on the dose.  Peace, all.

Arsia, I can identify with your problems and the inability of doctors to find a diagnosis.  Being a nurse, I did my own research on the internet and was able to diagnose myself with Leaky Gut Syndrome.  Go to this site for a test for LGS which may be your cause for the symptoms you identify.  Best of luck to you.

Thanks for discussing this topic. I have just started in the last year or so to experience the same symptoms as you. I am fine if I go for a walk, but if I do any weight work I feel fatigued about 12 to 24 hours later and have the symptoms of the flu. This can last for over a week.

I will look in the the adrenal fatigue issue. I was thinking more of a lactic acid allergy. I think that is fascinating about your white blood cell count. After about of going to the gym don't weights last year I ended up with pneumonia which I have never had before and came on very quickly.

Just want you to know you are not alone. Thanks

This is a magnesium issue.  Take magnesium on an empty stomach and don't eat for 45 mins.  I use magnesium Glycinate.  Solved my 10 year problem in one dose.  I got this info from a navy seal,  They get this issue all the time. Hope this helps.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

Try walking regularly without increasing the intensity till it does not cause any discomfort.

Try identifying and eliminating all allergens; try walking outdoors, indoors and eliminate allergens by trial and error method.

See an allergy specialist and for you the most important thing is to eat in moderation and to always eat healthy.

Take care!

I actually know how you feel about every single thing listed, along with chronic pain EVERYWHERE, severe headaches and digestive problems (among other things).
I've had these problems since 11 and they've fluctuated in severity ever since.
I've been seeing several different doctors for 6 years now, and still nothing. :/
My friend's mom went through the same thing for 10 years and it turned out she was allergic to processed food!
See your doctor and talk to him about the possibility, see if you can do some kind of elimination diet, just to knock out that option.
What about celiac?
