Its really hard for me to get early but it is a habit. Try to get up early for 2 or 3 days then you will not require any alarm to get up early.
I didn't really finish that thought -- the point being, that trying to shoehorn oneself into a pattern that doesn't fit can be as bad for someone as not getting some arbitrary amount of sleep.
Gym, really, it's not about you -- I used your age as an example, not you. There's a reason Florida, full of retirees, is well known for its early bird specials. But for every generalization, individuals will vary. But right now there is a lot of research going on in this area, and while most research doesn't give us any answers and research in two years is usually quite different, it does appear that different people have very different sleep habits.
Sorry Pax. but you're wrong about me! I was always an early bird! Even when I worked I would arrive into Manhattan almost 2 hr. early. As for going to bed I always watched Jay Leno until he left. It depends what i'm reading or watching but I turn in the earliest after the 11 pm news.
But you do need to realize that different people have different natural times when they fall asleep, and drinking a lot of water before going to bed can also wake you up in an hour. I know we're often forced to get up early due to the artificial lives we live, but research shows that different people do better going to bed at different times and getting up at different times, and that at different ages we also change -- Gymdandee, for example, is in his seventies, and older people are notorious for getting up really early and going to bed really early, whereas teenagers are better suited not to get up so early. So as you see, how easy it will be depends on how your body is programmed. I've just never been able to sleep before one AM except when I was very young, which has made it difficult my whole life to get up really early without sacrificing sleep. One way to make up for this is to meditate, which can give you the extra sleep in a short amount of time, and to get a nap in later if you find you just can't sleep early enough. But do try to go to bed earlier, and do try to tire yourself out by getting enough exercise.
Do you go to bed early? If you're not getting enough sleep that's a problem!
Do you use an alarm clock? if you do start setting it just a minute or two earlier per day and that can help. Drink plenty of water before going to bed that should wake you up early to empty your bladder. I like getting up early and going to the gym so I don't have to wait to get to the machines. I'm in and out in 1 1/2 - 2 hr.
