by JoeDoe_, Dec 17, 2006 12:00AM
Hello People .
I am 30 years old Male 5'7 weighing 180 lb
I decided to start working out about 2 months ago
I work out 5 days a week usually M-F I start at 4 PM
I walk / power walk ( because I hate running ) up to 5.5 miles(1.5hrs) each day I keep my heart rate up between 120-150 BPM
after my cardio regiment I do muscle training . I am at the Gym
exercising about 2-2.5 hrs a day.

My questions are :
a. I don't sleep good after work outs or at perhaps its just a coincident.
b. Is it possible that I am overdoing it and it could be dangerous to my health. (I always thought exercising is supposed to make you feel better.)
c. Is it normal that after workout I feel like ,a needle is in my heart when I take a deeper breath. ( can this be a heart condition ? Should I be concerned ?)

thanks for feed back guys :)

If you get an opportunity, pls. go to Active.com.  There is an excellent article on running (I know you lothe running, but when you read the article, just mentally place "workout" in the place of "run") by Matt Fitzgerald.  It's called "Train to Recover - Don't Recover to Train".  You'll have to follow the running prompts to find the artice.

That whole needle in the heart thing should be checked out, when was your last physical!  Are there not people at your gym that might answer some of your exercise concerns?  Good luck, let me know if you find the article helpful, I'd bet you will.

With your weight and age (right on the edge where heart disease starts) you should have a complete physial with an EKG and stress test before doing any exercise program. In general exercise is excellent for overall health, but like anything too much can be dangerous. For example eating 1-2 oranges a day is great but eating 20 a day isn't.

You are overtraining.  You are at a healthy weight.  You should be doing 30 minutes cardio followed by 30 minutes weights 2-3 times per week.

Also, you should have a physical.

I highly recommend meeting with a trainer and setting up a plan with your fitness goals in mind.

Don't work out right before you want to sleep, go earlier in the day.  All those endorphins will keep you pumped and make sleep a problem.

You are definitely overtraining.  I suggest visiting the bodybuilding.com forums for very informative workout plans and recommendations.  That site is awesome.  If you still cant sleep, try taking a melatonin supplement 1-2 hours before bedtime.  It helps me.
