Is too much calcium bad for you?

Hi I recently bought a 600mg calcium with vitamin D, becaue I was told by my dentist that I had decalcification shown on my teeth. And that was the reason I bought them. But now Im scared cause My older sister told me it is very bad to take too much calcium and now I've stopped taking them. I took two chewables which is 1200 mg for 5 days now im scared cause she told me that can damage my bones. Also her doctor told her that even 500mg is too much. I am an active female age 19.

Thanks. You made me feel better. But I'll still make an appointment to my doctor's so she can recommend me a supplement or if I can continue with the GNC calcium 600mg chewable with vitamin D.

Hello!

A calcium overdose may cause frequent urination, constipation, or kidney stones. The body has a natural mechanism for protecting against calcium overdose. For your age you can safely take doses between 1200mg-1500mg.

Women who are already at risk for developing kidney stones should take caution about taking supplements. They can contribute to stone formation. Any woman taking supplements may get constipation and acid stomach and you should report to your physician if you have these above symptoms. Keeping total intake to 1500 mg/day virtually eliminates this problem.
