Right Joint Hip Pain from Butterfly Stretch

Right Joint Hip Pain from Butterfly Stretch

I'm a 22 year old male 145 lbs. 5'9'', active and lean. I experience a pretty intense tightness/pain doing the butterfly stretch (bringing the soles of your feet together and pulling in and pressing your knees down) in my right hip joint area.  When doing the stretch there is an extreme difference between the right and left leg.  I can feel the pain at the part of the joint closest to the ground and on the top of the joint.  It feels more like a tightness than something wrong with the joint itself.  Generally I don't notice the pain in everyday life, but since I've started running again recently (normally I bike, rock climb, or just walk) I can feel a pulling, sometimes painful feeling in my right groin area, which can be stopped if I shorten my steps and bend my right knee a bit more.  I don't notice the pain while running.

After running though the pain is much more pronounced and the joint feels less mobile and tighter.  I've had problems with my legs on and off since I was a child.  I used to get really bad ankle pain, then it was knee pain up into high school, then this pain started sometime in high school.  I'm unsure if they were related.

My parents got me custom orthodics on a recommendation by a track coach in high school, which really seemed to make things a lot worse.  I've been told I'm fairly flat-footed.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful.

Also, I wanted to let people know that I had no pain anywhere else or in any other positions.  Sitting doesn't bother me, I spend a lot of the day in class.  Also there is no lower back pain.  The pain doesn't feel so much like joint pain as it does a really intense stiffness.  The butterfly stretch is really the only thing i know that can really hit it, but it feels more uncomfortable than like it's stretching something.  This is only on the right side.

Hello!

The butterfly stretch is done normally to treat a groin strain and is performed in a sitting position.

When you do a butterfly stretch then flexion, abduction, and external rotation of the hips takes place. This stretches the muscles of the inner thigh and I would suggest you to do this under a trainer and if it still causes pain avoid this. The pain can be due to some muscle involvement or nerve involvement or some problem in your lower spine.

I would suggest you to follow up with an orthopedician for proper diagnosis and to rule out any complications.

Take care!
