Sideache

Sideache

I have had problems with my right side just below or at the base of my ribs hurting when breathing rapidly.  The pain does not feel like a sideache but rather a deeper pain.  The pain goes away within minutes of regular breathing.  The pain started almost 20 years ago during wrestling.  The pain went away (probably due to lack of activity) but resumed over the past couple years when I began working out again.  Generally speaking, the pain is most active during a run; however, the pain may stick around if I push my activity day after day.  I have been seen by a number of doctors who have failed to find the source of the pain.  This includes a surgeon who performed an exploratory surgey.  The most recent doctor believes the pain to be higher than I once thought.  He thinks it is a muscle tear of some kind under the right side of my ribs or at the base of my ribs.  Has anyone heard of such an injury lasting for so long?  If so, any positive outcome?  I just want to workout like a normal person.

There is a condition in which the cartilge between the ribs becomes inflamed and you can get mild to moderate side pain especially when pressing on the area that hurts. The name of the condition fails me now but I do know that it is benign.

I wouldn't wory to much if you have had exploritory surgery done and they found nothing. But you may want to get a stress test done and a cardio work up if your docotr feels it is needed.

I know of costochondritis and Tietze syndrome which is inflammation of the cartilate in and around the ribs.  However, this most often occurs around the sternum and upper chest.  Tietze syndrome a.k.a. "slipped rib syndrome" is where the cartilage and supporting muscle for a rib becomes weakened.  This can produce chronic pain, and possibly pain which can be re-activated by exercise.  The fact that you hurt yourself while wrestling means that there is a muscoskeletal cause most likely.  Tietze could be a possibility--here's a link with more info:

NSAID's will most likely be your best treatment with this type of chronic pain.

Also, you may consider referred pain from the spine or other areas in your chest.  The fact that the pain is higher than you remember means that it could be of different origin.

You've been to several doctors already, but I'll say this anyways (for other readers):

This board is not meant for diagnosis, chest pain is a serious symptom that should always be throroughly evaluated by a physician.
