Sternum injury

by Facility74, Oct 12, 2009 10:30AM
I'm brand new to the site, and not sure if this is the proper place for this, but here it goes.

I practice mixed martial arts, and was injuried during the jiujitsu part of training. I was rolling with a man who outweighs me by about 80lbs. "Rolling" is when both people are grappling 100% full force while looking for the sbumission. I was on my back, and my opponent had me in side control. When I exhaled, he placed his shoulder into my sternum and leaned into me with all of his weight. A whole 263lbs! I did want feel anything when it happened, however I was out of breath. About 2 days later, I felt this horrible pain in my sternum and around the lower left side of my ribcage.  I thought it was because I was out of shape and just jumped pretty deep into training. The pain in my ribcage went away after about 2 weeks.

I waited about a week before seeing the doctor. He took X-rays, said everything looked good, gave me 500mg of Naproxen, 1 tablet, 2 times a day as needed for pain, and he gave me Ambien for my insomnia. Two days later, I called the doctor back because I was in severe pain. He stated there was nothing stronger he could give me, and if it got worse, to come back. Makes no sense, right? Well, a month into the injury, I saw another doctor, who ordered a CT scan with contrast. They did the CT on my stomach, not chest. Idiots. The doctor even stated it is possible that I might have broken/fractured my sternum and it could be poking my lungs. He basically did nothing for me.

I was in such pain, about 2 days later, I went to the ER. The doctor ordered another CT, this time without contrast. He stated the CT looked good, saw no problems. He stated that it was probably just a deep contusion, and that people with broken ribs typically start to feel a ittle better within 3 to 4 weeks. It had already been a month for me, and my pain was peaking. He gave me a shot for pain, which lasted all of 20minutes, and told me to use a heating pad and double my dosage of Naproxen.

For the first month, when I started to feel hungry, the pain felt worse. Once I ate, I felt a little better. I'm not sure if it was the medicine or the injury, but I've had soft, dark stools, and even felt constipated at times. The pain has been so bad that it's awaken me from sleep even while I was on the ambien. I'm a 29yr old man, and was curled into a ball of the doctor's table crying like a little kid.  When I first used the heating pad, I loved it. The pain was gone for about 2 days, but then it came back. The pad no longer helps, and actually makes me feel worse. Eating does not help the pain anymore. The naproxen helps for about 20mins. The pain has recently surfaced around my ribcage again on the leftside and even moved up into my chest a little. I also have felt a little lightheaded, and I often feel like I want to throw up. I'm coughing just a little bit as well. I've seen small town doctors, and I don't know what else to do. I'm in excruciating pain all the time, and don't know if there is anything that can be done about it. I've read articles stating that fractures are hard to diagnose, and some sternum injuries can take anywhere from 1 month to over 1 year to heal. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
