Why can't I lose weight?

I have been working out for 5 months now. I work out 5 days a week anywhere from 1-3 hours a day. I am also on a diet plan and take supplemental weight loss pills recommended by a nutritionist. I have not shed a single pound. I am in school going into the medical field. I know all about muscle weighing more than fat. I have taken many health and nutrition classes and know the difference between good and bad. But this problem has clearly stumped me. I like to mix up my exercise routines from yoga to swimming. Anyone have any really awesome tips?

I eat around 2300 calories a day which is target amount for my level of exercise and being a parent. I have set meals for every day recommended by my nutritionist. I do not drink, eat junk foods, or fast foods as I suffer heartburn/acid reflex. So from that already, I have a limiting diet. I'm in my early 20's and need to lose my baby weight. I am 30 pounds overweight. I do not look it, but I can see it, and feel it.

Hi there!

You are following a good work out regimen by rotating between various physical activities. The mantra to a healthy body weight is a healthy lifestyle. If you are aiming at losing weight, it is important to calculate your current BMI and the target BMI. The target BMI should be in a healthy range. Aside indulging in moderate amounts of physical exercise it is also essential to maintain a healthy diet plan. It is important to know that a diet plan is not about cutting down calories; it’s about ‘healthy’ eating. When one cuts down on calories, the body sends a signal to the brain which in turn turns on the ‘stress hormones’ and the body switches into the ‘starvation mode’ and paradoxically one may notice an increased weight. One would need adequate amount of calories to support the basic metabolic functions and if you work out vigorously between 1-3 hours a day, your required calorie intake rises. A healthy diet should consist of adequate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fat and plenty of fruits and vegetables to supply vitamins and minerals. I personally do not support nutritionists who recommend cutting down on diet and ‘diet pills’. Nothing works like magic and most of these diet pills are either hoax and do not work or are harmful to health. One may take medications that help to lose weight only after consultation by a medical practioner and such medications are only advised in morbid obese people when nothing else works. If still your weight does not seem to budge, I would suggest consulting a physician to rule out hormonal or endocrine abnormalities which may result in increased weight. If any abnormality is found, it would be treated appropriately.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
