having extra unnecessery layers of fats on certain parts of your body is termed as obesity....being over weight can be termed as "fat"
HOLD UP.
To be quite honest, the term "fat" is meaningless. It is simply an insult used by rude and naive people, or a description used by a person when they are not comfortable with how their body looks at the moment. "Fat" is a social construction of a physical ideology.
To be accurate, you are concerned if you are "overweight". Only your doctor can tell you that accurately. Being overweight is determined by having too large of BMI, or your Body Mass Index. This is the percentage of fat of your body. Doctors say a normal range is 18.5-24.9%, with over weight as above 25, obesity as above 30, and severe obesity 35 and up.
Now, that being said, what really matters at the end of the day is how HEALTHY you are. Body shape and size is NOT a direct correlation to health. Being skinny does not always mean healthy, nor does being large mean healthy either.
For instance, I'm a swimmer, and a fairly good one too. A teammate of mine is what (morons) would call "fat". I laugh every time I hear it, because it's what I thought too until I got into the water and she lapped me 3 times in a set. She's not ripped with muscle, she's not an Olympian. She's healthy. She eats clean, works out, and (yes I realize it sounds cheesy) takes her vitamins.
And if you do find out that your doctor thinks you need to drop a few pounds, don't freak! You can change! Your body is 30% exercise and 70% clean eating. Check out my earlier posts if you'd like some other advice on lifestyle changes in regards to food especially.
Have a beautiful day:)
