fasting

by billmysonsdad, Aug 04, 2006 12:00AM
Ok i was wondering if anyone knew anything about "juice fasting"? My sister did it for 2 weeks straight and lost an enormous amount of weight! I just want to know how safe it is and if its even healthy. My sister is a "yoga guru" and loves "purifying" her body but im not sure if its healthy or not? Thanks

Juicing is very popular right now and can be a very healthy drink.  There are fruit juices and vegetable juices and combined juices for those who hate to taste their veggies.  The idea is that you eat the part of the plants and fruits that contain the vitmains and minerals getting enormous amounts of good stuff without the calories you would if you sat down and ate all of the fruits and veggies separately. Juicing should be done with a two stage juicer, that is when the juice goes into the glass and the pulp and other fibers go into another chamber.  If you eat all that fiber you would have diarrhea.  With just the juice you can avoid the diarrhea. You can use the pulp in muffins and breads for the fiber (mid morning or late afternoon snack) so that it is not wasted. Fruit and veggies should be fresh as possible, so purchase only enough for a coule of days worth at a time. Veggie or combined juicing made with a variety of dark leafy veggies as well as carrots, celery, and tomatoes can be a good replacement for one or maybe two meals, but at least one meal each day should be of protein and other low fat "chewables". To lose weight, eat more of the veggie juices than the fruit juices. Eat one or two of the "pulp" muffins to stay regular in the bathroom.   Hope this helps.
