joint click while weight lifting

by candy67cane, Nov 09, 2006 12:00AM
I am 40 y.o (female)and just started lifting weights (upperbody)I'm sure I'm moving properly, but I get a click or crack in my shoulder (one side only) every time I do a rep.  Also get periodic cracking in knees.  Do you know what causes this?  Should I keep working out?  (I really need to!)  Thanks!

This is called crepitus and often times may not be any problem at all especially if you dont have any pain. If this is happening in your shoulder when doing a shoulder press, I recommend lifting only to a 90 degree angle this may help ,decrease the amount of crepitus you hear and feel. As you build muscle you are helping support the joint more so it is always impotant to exercise. But if you ever feel any pain, stop what you are doing and consult a professional
