tick disease in llamas

by tmv, May 05, 2007 12:00AM
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone has any info on the tick disease that paralyzes llamas? My in-laws have a few and one of them was said to have that disease. Will it totally paralyze her? How soon? What about having babies, will it bother either of them? Thank you in advance for any responses.

From what I have been able to find on the internet, tick paralysis disease can be treated if caught early (within 24-72 hours).  It seems like the most effective treament is removal of the tick (or ticks, which may require shearing the fur to get all the ticks off) and treatment with ivermectin (their vet would have to provide them with the correct dosage).  If this works they then may want to start using tick repellents (pyrethrins) to help prevent any future ticks from attaching.  I'm not sure what these drugs would do to any developing llama babies, so it would be a good idea for them to consult with their vet first.  Hope this helps a little.
