2nd Restor surgery update

by BxBinky, Nov 04, 2006 12:00AM
I previously wrote back in March that I had a left eye cataract removal and the Restor implant done. The results were less than what I had been led to believe. I had double vision and ghosting. As a result I could not read except in bright outdoor light. Distance vision was just ok. The Doc said the on a technical level the surgery was perfect. Perfect centering, prescription and healing, just give it time. There was some slight improvement with 6 mos. time but nothing like I was lead to believe would be the outcome. I then sought a second opinion from his Senior partner Dr.Wong. He said that indeed the 1st surgery was perfect but that I had some slight astigmatism in the eye. He recomended going right ahead and doing the right eye and limbal relaxation on the left eye. He did it this past Wed. 11/1. So far the results are quite spectacular. 3 days later, I can mostly read indoors in good light, I bought cheap $10.00 readers for the poor light ( they work) and my itermediate and distance vision is near perfect. I fully expect that when the edema and swelling go down and my brain adjusts to my new eyes that the end results will be great! My persoal advice to to ALL post-op IOL patients is to WAIT, allow the brain to adjust and if you are bi-lateral, get the 2nd eye done soon after the 1st. And above all DO NOT! constantly open and close one eye to compare it to the other. Let you eyes work in tandem. Let your brain adjust and have patience and a positive attitude.

Wonderful news!  So glad that you had a doctor willing to solve the problem. Great advice too, as I was always comparing both eyes.  WIll take your advice.  Thanks.

I don't really know how much astigmatism I had. It was enough to cause ghosting and double vision on the edges of objects that had color contrast relative to their backgrounds. Such as utility poles, flag poles, street signs and worst of all reading material. Bright light made reading more bearable. Now after the limbal relaxation procedure and the 2nd Restor implant I can already see an improvement after only 4 days. Each day I see improvement and I am determined to continue to improve.
Allow me an observation... In my opinion most of the folks that come to this sight seem to me to be very bright, anylitical, educated consumers and research oriented types. And If I may say so: ANAL! I think that I too fit this catagory. That being said, I also have come to the realization that after the surgery has been completed the final results will be determined by our attitude, patience and faith in whatever is your supreme belief system. Use your drops, Lead your life and don't keep testing your eyes. They will slowly get better and improve.
My problem was that the Doctor that did my 1st eye was a great technician but a little timid when it came to solving my particular problems. His attitude was to wait and wait and wait. That made me go to his boss for a 2nd opinion. The 2nd guy who has been maligned here in the past was spot on with his diagnoses. Now I have to have patience and fortitude. I WILL GET BETTER!!!
