4 weeks after Cataract surgery still having severe symptoms

I am 46 years old and otherwise in good health and I am physically fit. I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes. The right about 5 weeks ago and the left almost 4 weeks ago. I had crystalens put in and my eyesight is excellent.

However starting after about a week after my second surgery I started having a reaction to light. Not just a little sensitivity but an affect that cascades into the inabilty to concentrate on anything. My eyes will be very sore and it hurts to try to look at anything. The surgeon had prescribed econopred and that seemed to help at first. My episodes were limited to the morning and would pass in an hour or so.

In a follow up appointment this week that perhaps I was having ocular migraines. We also discussed stopping the use of all meds (I had used acular after the surgery but had only intermittingly used it in the last week). I believe that the migraine supposition is partially because of the the report that the time of episodes are limited as well as my reporting that I feel very agitated at the same time.

However, for the last two days I have stopped the steroids and the episodes are basically all day. It is not as intense but is consistent. This is basically disabling me as I cannot drive often and I am often out of sorts at work.

I am currently scheduling an appt. with another opthamologist in Atlanta.

Any ideas...has anybody else experienced this.

I honestly would rather have the functional blindness that I had than this current condition. I am miserable without any answers.

a second opinion is a great idea.  photophobia has many causes, some serious & some not.  another evaluation is definitely warranted.

although still having symptoms only 4 weeks out is not usually too concerning...some of this could still resolve.  regardless, having someone else look is a good idea

I too have Crystalens in both eyes.  I'm wondering if you had light sensitivity before the cataract surgery?  If you did, is it worse since the surgery or are you just expecting that it wouldn't be there anymore.

My eyes were very sore after my Crystalens surgery, for a couple months.  Looking from side to side was somewhat painful.  And being at work trying to carry on as usual was difficult because my eyes were so tired all the time.  But fortunately that wears off with time.

My eyes are still very light sensitive though, I just wear sunglasses alot.  My vision is quite good.

I agree with the Doctor though.

Reading your comments makes me glad I did not go the CrystalLens way for my surgery.I think they do have to be sewn in or at least it is a little more complicated to implant them.
I was back to work in two days and experienced no pain or soreness--did not even need a Tylenol --but I didn't have anesthesia-just local mumbing. Just had the common variety lens and still wear glasses for more precise viewing.

Thanks,I did not have light sensitivity before. Now it feels as though I am being poked in the eye and can be extremely sensitive to light.

What type of lens did they use for your cataract surgery?  You mentioned a fast recovery.  I know that I will need to have this surgery in the future because I just had a Vitrectomy.  Thank you.

If you are light sensitive now and were not before surgery. Call your MD today, even if your appt is not this week, and tell them. You might need to increase your steroid eyedrops, but check with your surgeon!!!
