Astigmatism or retinal damage?

by t120, Jan 06, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, according to the opthamologist, i have Astigmatism, but i was convinced i had retinal damage.

Before all this, my eye sight seemed perfect (never strained), then a few months ago (i think after looking directly at sun) i started to experience pain, less focus, slight blured vision, morning hallucinations, floaters and red sollowen vessels starting with my left eye, then feeling the same with my right.

Even when i lift weights, my eyes will feel itchy, red and blured. My left eye even looks slightly unfocused (lazy)as result. Does this sound like Astigmatism?

He seemed to do extensive eye checks, so if he said my retina is not damaged, i take it i should have full confidence in this?

Thanks, t120

"my eyes will feel itchy, red and blured. My left eye even looks slightly unfocused (lazy)as result. Does this sound like Astigmatism?"

astigmatism does not cause itchy or red eyes.  those 2 complaints are absolutely unrelated to astigmatism.  also unrelated to any possible retinal damage (retinal damage doesnt cause red or itchy eyes either).

but yes, the BLUR/unfocused could be (and most likely is according to your ophthalmologist) b/c of astigmatism.

"He seemed to do extensive eye checks, so if he said my retina is not damaged, i take it i should have full confidence in this?"

yes.  you either have retinal damage or you dont.  most retinal damage is OBVIOUS.  very rare to have "occult" retinal damage, or retinal damage that is undetectable in an eye exam.

so.  sounds like you do not have retinal damage, but you do have astigmatism, which is an unrelated refractive problem.  you also have complaints of redness and itchy eyes which sounds like possible ocular ALLERGY to me...also unrelated to astigmatism and.or retinal problems
