I had mine fitted 8 weeks after the surgery. I have a hydroxyapatite implan with a plastic peg and acrylic prosthesis - done 15 years ago. My implant took 2 years to finally settle down, and during that time I had to keep having the prosthesis adjusted. My prosthesis looks good now but is always either dry, oozing gunk, or itching, and stays infected more often than not. If the pain of my blind eye had not been unbearable, I would be seriously regretting enucleation. If it were only a matter of appearance, I could have tried to go with a scleral shell.
