Constantly RED, dry, irritated eyes

I have eyes that don't naturally produce enough tears (my eye doctor performed this test sticking what looked like pieces of litmus paper in my eye folds, and looked at how much of it was damp afterwards). The most annoying thing though is that they are always red, bloodshot, and irritated--I don't live in a polluted city, my living habits are healthy and normal, but whenever I exercise (walking, rollerblading, etc.) my eyes get even more red and irritated, to the point where it hurts to keep them open. In fact it seems like the more fresh air they get the more red and irritated?? I currently use Visine tears, and I try to stay away from the normal Visine because I heard from an ophthalmologist that vasocontrictors/dilators aren't good for your eyes, but always having red, irritated eyes is both annoying and very unattractive (people have pointed out my red eyes, thinking I have pinkeye). What can I do to relieve these problems?

Possibly pertinent info: nearsighted, wear corrective lenses about 50% of the time (when driving, in class, etc.) and I don't/never have wear/worn contacts. Have very high eye pressure (bordering glaucoma level? does not run in family, but eye doctors I see always mention that my eye pressure is very high) Not sure if that matters, just throwing out all possibly relevant info, but would love to know how to fix the red, irritated, dry eyes!

Thanks for any help!

you mean you have told eye docs this and they have no diagnosis for you?  no, having mildly elevated IOP does not usually have much to do with chronically irritated/red eyes.  but it does limit the number of things we as a profession could theoetically do for red/orrotated eyes.  putting a person with elevated IOP on steoid (anti-inlfammatory) eyedrops is probably not a great idea.  although the newer loteprednol does not seem to have as much IOP elevating effect as previous steroids...

you could try restasis: anti-inflammatory/anti-dryness Rx eyedrop.  brand new end expensive, but specifically designed for patients with low tear output...

agreed please dont use vasoconstrictors.

i dont know.  if you were my patient i'd consider restasis
