Detached Retina and Tonic Water

by sam823, Jan 14, 2007 12:00AM
About 2 years ago my wife had surgery to correct a detached retina. For about two years prior to her getting the detached retina my wife was drinking tonic water, which was recommended by our family doctor for leg cramps. As you are probably aware tonic water contains quinine. Around the time of her surgery I happened across various internet sites in regard to quinine, and found out that quinine can cause blindness and is considered by some to be a retinal toxin. Needless to say my wife no longer drinks tonic water and her eyes have been Ok since. My question is this, are there or have there been any other cases of individuals developing eye problems from long term drinking of tonic water?

dont know.

tonic water probably did not have anything to do with her retinal detachment, however.  quinine causes maculopathy, not retinal detachment as far as i know.
