Eye Muscle Surgery on an eye with a detatched retna (amongst other things).

I was born with a detatched retna in my left eye. It has been a wandering eye since then. Over the years, it has also developed a cataract, glaucoma and has wrapped itself around another part of the back of my eye. As I'm sure you can imagine, it's not the prettiest thing in the world. Because I am told I will never be able to see with it and that it's slowly deteriorating, which will result in the need of a glass eye, I want to get eye muscle surgery to remedy atleast one part of problem so I can try to enjoy what I can of having an actual eye before the situation worsens and I don't have it anymore. I know I can always get a custom contact to disguise the discoloration and fact that I don't have a normal pupil due to the cataract. (I was told removal of the cataract, since it's added to the mass of my eye, will speed up the deteriorating process since there will be less of it)

During an appointment with a surgeon I was told I had the option of getting the eye muscle surgery, but when I brought it up to my optometrist he sided against it but didn't go into the details as to why. I have been made fun of all my life for it, and have also been rediculously self-conscious because of it.
Would the results last long? Is it worth the cost and whatnot? Is it even possible to do, given my situation?
If anyone could share any info on the situation it would be much appreciated.

I thought I'd add the question I've had about my blind eye and computers. The "wandering" condition seems to worsen with increasing time at the computer. I've noticed after a couple hours at the computer, my eye will be extremely "crossed" in the sense that it's almost completely facing my nose. As opposed to not being at the computer at all. In which case it's not as extreme. Why might that be?
