Eye Pupil unequal appearance and sinus problems

by CaseyH, Jun 05, 2006 12:00AM
About 5 months ago(about the same time I started taking Ortho TriCyclen)I noticed that one of my pupils was larger than the other, days later the opposite pupil was the larger one. This has been going on now for months. I went to an eye doctor and had an exam which came out perfectly fine, when I asked the eye doc. what could be causing the rotating unequal pupil sizes, he told me that I would have to see my family doc., which I did immediately after leaving the eye doctor, my family doctor also said that my eyes looked fine. Now for the past month I have had dizziness and weird head feelings and my ears have fullness all of the time, my sinuses drain down my throat but never through my nose. I also take Zoloft 50mg for anxiety (wich has been worse lately from all of the symptoms I am having)I have also had a headache off and on for days that doesnt go away. it is on the top of my head. I am worried sick about a brain tumor or aneurisym. Do you think that my eye pupil problems have anything to do with the sinus pressure and headaches? What should I do, I do not have insurance..

i do not personally think varying pupil sizes are likely do be due to sinus problems.  the headaches could, however.

i also do not think your specific pupil descriptions could be due to brain tumor or aneurisym.  aneurisym causes a "blown" pupil...a pupil that is much larger and does not work.  that is not what you are describing.  tumors cause pupil constriction problems that would be obvious on an eye exam.

if you are really worried about it, go see a neurologist.  but for a young lady to have varying pupil sizes does not sound too concerning.  especially if nothing was found on an eye exam.  if both pupils work (constrict) and you do not have an afferent pupillary defect (which i'm sure both your eye doc and your family doc both ruled out as soon as you complained of varying pupil size), then it is highly unlikely IMO that anything serious is going on with your eyes.

I have read about Horner's Syndrome, my unequal pupils are more noticeable in a darker room, could this be a possible diagonsis? The first eye doctor did not mention it to me..

yes, that is possible.  as is "adie's pupil" and other things.  none of them are dangerous or solvable (no treatment)

Thanks for your response, that does calm my nerves some. My eye appt. is Monday so hopefully I will find out the cause for my "weird" pupils. I will also bring some old photographs since I have read many posts of you recommending this. One last question about the aneurism worry, Could the varying pupils be from a clot or something that has not ruptured yet, like putting pressure behind my eyes causing the pupils to change from one being larger to the other, maybe leading up to a rupture? I also have inner ear problems with vertigo. My anxiety is through the roof right now worrying about all of the possibilies! Thanks so much for your help.

if you had a pending "rupture" with pressure, you'd likely have 1 pupil that acted funny all the time.  too dilated, etc under most/all lighting conditions.  based on your description, i doubt thats what you have.
