Floaters, blurred vision, and eye pain

by somebody_else, May 10, 2007 12:00AM
About two weeks ago, I noticed a single black line in the visual field of my left eye. It stayed in the same place and wasn't really noticeable unless I was looking at a non-patterned background. Since then, the vision in my left eye has become significantly worse than my left. I now have black/translucent floaters rather than a single stationary one. My left eye aches when I move it, although I'm not sure if this is a symptom in itself or whether it's a result of straining too much.
When I cover my right eye, I can sense something strange in my left peripheral visual field. I can't explain it properly but something isn't right about the lighting.
I've had two eye tests and neither can find any retinal problems. The blurred vision also can't be corrected with lenses so it isn't myopia/hypermetropia.
I was worried about optic neuritis but this doesn't usually present with floaters does it?
The optometrists said to wait and see if it gets worse and then come back for another test. I don't like the idea of waiting for something to get worse though.

'I've had two eye tests and neither can find any retinal problems.'

what do you mean by 'eye tests'?  you mean dilated eye examinations?  if you had 'multiple' dilated eye exams specifically looking for retinal problems and none were found, then you probably do not have a retinal problem.

'I was worried about optic neuritis but this doesn't usually present with floaters does it?'

NO.

'I don't like the idea of waiting for something to get worse though.
Answer'

well, thats really all you can do in the absence of retinal detachment/hole/tear.  get a second opinion or wait.
