Lattice Degeneration is that normal for a teenager?

by reinbow, Aug 08, 2005 12:00AM
My 17 yr old has had many doctors argue over treatment and eye conditions.  I do not know what I am suppose to do.  He has had eye problems since birth, he had eye pressures shoot way up and then go away after 20 minutes.  He has cupping and swollen optic nerves.  We were recently told he has Lattice Degeneration and there is a hole.  I was told he needs a cornea lens implanted with lasik procedure but do to his rapid eye changes he can not have any procedure to help him & he is not old enough.  he has myopia and we change lens in his glasses approx every 6 to 9 months.  Will lattice degeneration cause him to loose his eyesight?  Are there any treatments or anything to slow down his myopia?  I am at a loss and sadden to see him struggle. Any answers would be appreciated. thank you

Hi Carol,

Sorry to hear about your.   Although I don't have any first hand experience with lattice degeneration I belong to another web site where several people have been discussing it and you may find the information you are looking for.  It costs nothing to join and there is a lot of first hand experience.  Bulletin board is located at:

Hi-I am a woman well into her 30's living with lattice degeneration.  I am aware of the risks, and the dangers.  I used to do inversion exercise/gymnastics and was told I may no longer do them.  This is a strange disease, as it really was a shock to learn that I had it.  It was getting flashes of light in my eyes like fireworks, whenever I exercised real hard, or did anything strenuous.  I was getting eye-migraines, and pain.  I was checked and told about LATTICE DEGENERATION.  It is a bizarre condition, for sure, but I am living with knowing I have it, and just the awareness is beneficial.  I have 20/20 vision and have never worn glasses.  There are tons of websites with info on this. Good luck.
