Multi-purpose solution decision

by nyrm22, Oct 26, 2006 12:00AM
I currently have Acuvue Advance with Hydraclear disposable contact lenses.  I am using Aquify multi-purpose solution.  The other day, I saw a 3-pack of Kirkland brand multipurpose solution for the price of 1 bottle of Aquify.  I have read up on the subject and understand that multiple manufacturers compete every so often to see who gets to fill the generic brand bottles.  So you're never sure which brand and company you're getting from month to month.

What is your professional opinion on generic brand multi-purpose solutions?  Is there any worry about long-term eye problems after using the generic brands?

Thanks in advance.

in general i am a big fan of generics.  i rx generic oral & topical medications every day.  and the generic contact lens solutions are also fine most of the time for use with plastic contact lenses.

but i am NOT a fan of generic contact lens solution for use with SILICONE contact lenses like acuvue advance.  there was a recent study done:

http://www.staininggrid.com/

go look at that chart.  according to that study, 16% of acuvue advance users had significant clinical signs of corneal irritation/damage ("staining") when they used wal-mart brand multipurpose contact lens solution.  thats quite a bit.  only 2% who used acuvue advance with aquify had this problem (not statistically different from STERILE SALINE).  so i guess what i'm telling you is...i dont like it.  i would tell you not to use a generic contact lens solution with any silicone hydrogel like acuvue advance.  stick with the aquify, or choose another solution on the chart that is in the "green".
