Myopia

by chinti, Mar 25, 2007 12:00AM
Hi! My daughter is 6years old. Recently we checked her eyes.
She has -3.00 power in her both eyes. She could not read close
captioning on T.V from 10 feet distance.Me and My husband are having
glasses since we were approximately 14 and 9 years old respectively.
1 I want to stop progression or to elemently completely my daughters myopia.
Could you please write me if any of the following could help to stop progression or eleminate her myopia? And the possible side effects of these treatments
1   Orthokeratology
2   GP lenses
3   Atropine drop treatment
4   Nurovision or vision therapy
5   Do you know any other treatment which is appropriate for  her age?
Thanking you in anticipation,
chinti

sorry but i dont have time to list "all possible side effects" of all of those treatments.  we're talking pages and pages of type here.

ortho-k and gp's probably do work to some extent in lots of children in my opinion (but not all).  atropine and "neurovision" do not (IMO that is) work.

a gp or ortho-k fit from a contact lens specialist are probably your best bet IMO.  very safe and a good chance of working (but certainly not guaranteed)

There are no methods  to stop progression or eleminate myopia now. Ortho-K is not absolutely safe method for correct myopia. In 6 y.o - glasses only.

rusophth is apparently an expert on this subject (rolleyes).  maybe he should consider being the moderator?

i'm not going to waste too much of my time arguing with him or correcting him.  but i can tell you that there are many opinions on this.  ortho-k is perfectly safe.  anyone who states that ortho-k is not safe doesnt know jack about ortho-k (ahem).  this is a common misconception inexplicably perpetuated by ophthalmology that is rooted in 30 year old methods and bad propaganda.  OLD "traditional" ortho-k probably is not all that safe, especially for children.  ...of course nobody has actually used that method since about 1985.  maybe thats when rus was in his residency?  "ACCELERATED ortho-k", however has been shown in multiple independent studies to be no more dangerous than regular daily soft contact lens wear.

he can have his own opinion on whether or not ortho-k slows myopia progression.  i perform ortho-k myself and and i think the jury is still out on the matter.  but to say its "not safe" is just plain uneducated.

by aimee37, Mar 31, 2007 12:00AM
regular daily soft contact lens wear is not absolutely safe method too, especially at 6 y.o.
    .....so much words

by aimee37, Apr 01, 2007 12:00AM
that is your opinion, rus.  it is my opinion that contact lens wear in a supervised 6 year old is perfectly safe under the right conditions.  i am not stating that every 6 year old needs contacts...that would obviously be absurd.  but to state that "regular daily soft contact lens wear is not absolutely safe method too" is equally absurd.

by aimee37, Apr 01, 2007 12:00AM
I  AM NOT AGAINST YOUR RIGHT ON the OPINION And I HOPE FOR the SAME FOR ANY SPECIALIST. Good lack, Foru

by aimee37, Apr 02, 2007 12:00AM
whatever, rus.

i made multiple statements about ortho-k and myopia control, all followed by "IMO", meaning "in my opinion".  you, on the other hand, come on here like you own the place and post statements like they are fact...like when you stated "There are no methods to stop progression or eleminate (sic) myopia now", and "regular daily soft contact lens wear is not absolutely safe method too, especially at 6 y.o".  never even implying that these are YOUR OPINIONS.  arrogantly typing that junk as if it were somehow fact.  that comes across as extremely pompous.

you cant just come on here and make blanket statements like "contact lens wear is not absolutely safe", and have it somehow magically come across as undisputed fact just b/c you said it.  is that what you're used to in your country?  b/c that doesnt fly on this forum.  you have made what i consider to be some absolutely absurd statements here.  you have to at some point realize that the eye health world does not revolve around ophthalmology, especially ophthalmology in some third world country...  and your opinions dont fly here as undisputed fact.  if you post some unsolicited "answer" here, you should expect for me, as the moderator of this forum, to critique it.  you dont have free reign here to just post whatever you feel like posting.

are you even a doctor?

by aimee37, Apr 03, 2007 12:00AM
well he has "ophth" at the end of his username, so assumedly he's an ophthalmologist.  most laypeople cant spell "ophthalmologist".

what i suspect is an ophthalmology resident.  probably not in the US or UK, as English is obviously a second language for him.

Conflicts in the forum.. blanket statements.. haha.

by aimee37, Apr 04, 2007 12:00AM
Conflict of the opinions. Ordinary situation in the medicine (IMHO).
Do not worry. Best regards from Russian ophthalmologist/

In all my experience Ortho-K IS perfectly safe. So I disagree with you on that. Contacts in a 6 year old is also safe if performed under safe conditions as well. So I disagree with your statement on that as well.

by aimee37, Apr 05, 2007 12:00AM
Who said,   that cont. correction is dangerouse? Not i. But cont. wear may cause complications. One corneal ulcer per 2500 wearers (or about)  per year, for sample, and other. If i hadn t patients vith  CL penetr ulcer in my expirience. it do not meen, that this complication is impossible in general.
My smallest patient is girl in contacts of 5 y.o., but she have myopy -9,0D & ambliopy, - it is another situation/

That's not what I meant when I said "contacts." I think it's safe to assume that what I said could be taken into context on the subject of contact lens wear. Give me a break.

Is the door closed?

by aimee37, Apr 06, 2007 12:00AM
Judging by all your previous posts and comments I think it is a safe bet to assume you're a very arrogant OPHTHALMOLOGIST. Ophthalmologists tend to think themselves as "superior" or "above" optometrists so I'm not going to waste time arguing with you any more than I already have. Travel, OD

Best regards to optometrists. Good luck

?????? - friendship. Unated States & Russia are brothes forever/

What contacts(lenses) are more popular in US. In Russia - Optima FW, Biomedics (Softview) 55UV, Pure Vision; MPS - ReNuM+ & Opti-Free.
RGP and OrthoK is not  widely distributed (high cost).
Let smile more often, the life is beautiful.
Best regards to all opht- & optometrists, we have one business - eye health of people, especially children
