Myopia and retina tears

by Loti, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
I was told that I have a -7 for my vision. My doctor said that anyone over -5.5 is in a risk pool for things like retina tears. He told me not to worry too much, just to come in every year to have them checked. Despite that, I am still pretty nervous. How severe is -7, and for those who have above a 5.5, have you encounted any retina problems? Thank you.

-7.00 is not bad.  true that you are at slightly higher risk of retinal problems...i agree with that statement.  but that certainly does not mean you need to be 'nervous' about anything.  just go every year and get dilated every year.  thats it.

I have had -9/-7 for most of my life and no retinal problems. I am 70 years old now and, if I can trust my ophthalmologist, have otherwise healthy eyes - apart from the cataracts. Now, if I want to worry, I could concern myself with secondary cataracts now, but I am just not going to do it. There is no certainty in life.
