Ocular hypertension

I am a 37 female, I had an eye exam 3 years ago and the optomologist told me my eye pressure was on the high side at 18 in each eye. I just went for another eye exam and now the ocular pressure is at 21 in each eye. My optomologiste wants me to have the pressure mesured in a couple of days to see if it is still at 21. If so she wants me to see a specialiste even though everything else in my eyes seems healthy. There is no history of glaucoma in my family. I'm worried because I'm on the border line. Should I be concerned about glaucoma?

I'm worried.

assuming your optic nerve is healthy (which i obviously have no idea), i personally do not consider 18 as "high".  thats just 2 points above the worldwide AVERAGE iop which is 16 mmHg.

21 is obviously a little high-ER, but still not just awful IMO, especially if you have no field loss and healthy optic nerves.  do you?

i wouldnt be *too* worried about glaucoma, but yes, an IOP of 21 is certainly higher than average.

the good news is you probably have PLENTY OF TIME.  glaucoma is usually a slow progressing disease, so we usually have plenty of time to:

a) decide whether or not you have glaucoma
b) decide on the appropriate treatment if you do have glaucoma

keep your follow up appointments...
