Optic nerve atrophy

Optic nerve atrophy

We were told today that my 6yr son has "optic nerve atrophy" in his right eye. He is being referred to a pediatric specialist for a CAT scan to rule out anything pressing on the optic nerve. The doctor today said that the top half of the nerve is pale, but not the bottom. Is it common for only half the nerve to be affected? The info I have found on the interent is vague and does not address it very well. Thank you.

no optic nerve problem is "common".  he needs an MRI.  having a "pale" optic nerve or "atrophy" is not particularly a good sign.  poor prognosis of good vision in that eye, and possibly a sign of something more serious ie tumor, etc.

This is a follow up to my question posted on the 8th of Nov. After a CT scan & an MRI it turns out my son has an optic nerve glioma & is currently undergoing a round of Prednisone to try & shrink it. Thank you for your help.
