Phakic IOL option for toddler with high myopia

by sam12, Mar 19, 2006 12:00AM
My daughter 2 years old, has high myopia @ -14 D in both eyes. She barely started wearing glasses. I am worried about the progression of myopia, hence would like to know about IOL surgery for toddlers . Is it possible in USA for 2 year old ?.
Any experiences?
Alternatetly any source for toddler contact lens?

Appreciated a reply.

in thery an iol is certainly possible...iols are done for cataractous patients frequently.  but i would think it would be rather rare and i have personally never heard of anyone replacing the crystalline lens in a toddler w/o cataract.

contact lenses are certainly possible.

I have been reading about phakic IOL procedures for severe myopia, where there is no need to replace the actual eye lens. Just an artisan lens is placed permanently on iris.

I thought there might be some age restrictions by govt,or exceptions to that, but will await reply.

phakic iols are anterior chamber inrtaocular lenses for high myopia.  its fairly new, and as far as i know never tested on infants/toddlers.  i would think it possible, but i doubt you'll have an easy time fiding a surgeon to perform it on your 2 year old.
