Poor vision after detached renina surgery

Poor vision after detached renina surgery

My surgery for a detached retina was in Jan. od this year. The doctor said that I bled alot but my blood pressure was normal. He also said that he inserted a buckle in my right eye during the surgery. It has now been 8 mo. and the vision in my right eye is not good. It is distorted and blurey. Straight lines have a wiggle to them. Is this normal after surgery for a detached retins. I use my left eye only without even being aware of it. It also feels like something is rubbing inside my eye. Does not hurt though. What can I expect. Will my vision in my right eye get any better over time? Thank you for your responce.

my 12 yr old had that same surgery (first time) he has now had 3 detached retinas in all from oct to july 2005. Your vision should not be blurry nor should you be seeing anything wavy. The wavy lines tells me that your retina has become detached again. The same thing happened to my son. They then put the silicone oil in his right eye with face down position for weeks. This helped the retina back into place. The rubbing you feel are more than likely the stiches that hold the buckle into place (the back of the eyeball) in my sons case. These stiches never go away they will remain there forever. I suggest you go to another retina specialist (if your present doctor) is telling you that all is fine. Your buckle may have slipped out of place could be another reason for the rubbing. Do not wait make a appointment immediately. Detached retinas if left untreated only worsen quickly and you stand the chance of losing your vision. Hope this helps.

I have had two RD's on my right eye.  First time the macula had come almost all the way off and a vitrectomy was performed.  The second was just a tear and it was sealed and a partial buckly installed.  I lost my vision in the left eye during the first surgery so I am left with only the right eye.  I too have blurred and double vision at distance.  The vision got markedly worse after the second surgery.  Your squiggly vision is likely caused because the macula and/or retina in not sitting flat, which means there might be some fluid underneath.  Small amounts of fluid may be reabsorbed in a few months.  As noted it could be another detachment but I rather doubt it.  The blurry vision can be the result of a change in prescription.  It takes up to a year after RD surgery for the eye to recover and you many need several new prescriptions during this period.  Most Dr won't let you get a new prescription until after 3 months because the vision is changing almost day to day.  The other cause for the blurry vision could be a cataract which results when ever gas bubble is used.  Some patients develop quick growing cataract which may affect vision very quickly.  I have a slow growing cataract.   Certainly consult with your Dr immediately.
